Judges' Critiques
Dogs
My sincere thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge
dogs at their championship show. You are a fantastic committee, who all work so
well together, showing real team workmanship. It was very humbling to receive
such a wonderful entry, both numerically and with such quality.
I had the pleasure of going over some lovely dogs, in some
classes, I wished there had been more placings.
Thank you to all who entered, also for the sportsmanship shown
around the ringside. I also thank my two very able stewards for keeping
everything running smoothly.

Bitches
I would first like to
express my thanks to the Club for inviting me to judge my first CC appointment –
coincidentally the same Club also gave me my first breed show at Open level in
the UK . I am deeply indebted to exhibitors for giving me an entry of quantity
and quality . My overview of the day was that we have some fabulous bitches at
the moment. Classes were well filled throughout, I was spoilt for choice and
some lovely bitches were unplaced because the competition was so strong .
Temperaments were mainly what we would expect in our breed, just one or two that
on the day were a little unsure and unfortunately this had to be taken into
account. Movement was in the main good and most were shown carrying no excess of
weight, just a handful were a little heavy which can and should be rectified.
It’s been some years since I was a regular at shows in the UK, and I can say
with all honesty that I had no preconceived ideas of where my decisions would
take me as all exhibits were new to me.
Minor Puppy Bitch
(14,7a)
1st Miss J
Digweed Willokins Getting Jiggy With It .7 mths black of substance. Appealing
expression and feminine head. Correct front and rear angulation, with a well
turned stifle. Correct coat.Tight neat feet. She has a very classy outline when
standing which she held on the move, although her movement needs to tighten
which will come as she matures.
2nd Mr S.J
and Mrs L.A O’Brien Maxfield Penny Lane. Yellow who was smaller in stature that
1 but this is not to her detriment in any way. Super sweet head with excellent
pigment and lovely appealing expression. Overall excellent construction. Moved
very well. She just lacked a little animation which could have given her first
place but I’m sure this will come.
Puppy Bitch ( 19,5a )
1st Mrs D
McGill Deniangill Almost Had It All. Well grown 11mth old yellow with a super
head and expression. Strong clean neck into well placed shoulders. Well boned
legs and tight feet. Level topline with a good barrel rib. Excellent hind
angulation. In good coat. Moved soundly. I liked her a lot and will watch her
progress. Best Puppy Bitch.
2nd Mr A
and Mrs J Metcalfe Baileydale Hello Sailor . Unlucky to meet 1 and I was
splitting hairs between the two. Yellow who has the most appealing head with
superb pigment that makes her expression. Very clean in neck, into level topline.
Excellent front and rear angulation. Good bone and tight feet, and moved well. I
just preferred the overall scope of 1 today but I have no doubt this is a top
class puppy who will win well.
Junior Bitch (12,4a)
1st C.J.
and C.E Mills Lembas Black Pearl. Black of substance whose make and shape
appealed to me. Just out of puppy, she is well grown though without coarseness.
I would have preferred a slightly more almond eye, but I liked her head. Strong
through neck and shoulder, well boned legs, excellent barrel, short loin and
correct coat. Happy outgoing showgirl who moved well once settled.
2nd Mrs C
Thomson and Miss R Hunkerhill Strathhunker Gabrielle. Yellow of good allround
conformation . Appealing head with good pigment and eye colour. Clean neck, good
topline, correct coat. Moved steadily and soundly.

excellent coat and condition. Pleasing head, strength through the neck into well

appealing head. All round excellent make and shape with good bone and tight
feet. In good coat. Moved well. I just preferred the overall substance of 1.

substance. Longer cast than some but she is well proportioned and well put
together. Attractive head on clean strong neck leading into well angulated
front. Good bone and feet . Level in topline and well sprung rib, with plenty of
width to hindquarters. Moved well.
2nd Evans
and Newton Miss E and Mr J Eminala Star Struck Farnfield. Yellow of slighter
build than 1. Has a pleasing head with good pigment and is well constructed
throughout with enough bone for her size. I preferred the front angulation on 1.
Moved soundly and steadily.
Graduate Bitch (
(14,1a)
1st Mrs
M.A Percival Wynfaul New Years Eve JW. Smaller black but what she lacks in size
she makes up for in quality, with breed type in spades. Absolutely gorgeous head
and expression. Clean neck into super shoulders and front assembly. Level
topline, good spring of rib, excellent hindquarters. So well balanced. Moved
very well in the class, unfortunately she was distracted in the challenge and
even with a second chance she did not move as positively and paid the price.
Nevertheless I feel this will be a top winning bitch and I will watch with
interest.
2nd Mr D
and Mrs F Braddon Chyanhal Pendray In Trendlewood. Black who was longer cast but
still displayed balance. Good head, expression spoilt a little by her refusal to
consistently use her ears. Correct front and rear angles, good bone and neat
feet. Moved soundly.
Post Graduate Bitch
(14,3a)
1st Mrs
M.A.Percival Wynfaul Dancing Flame JW. Oh my goodness, this yellow just blew me
away. From the end of her nose to the tip of her tail she is quality and I
couldn’t find a single thing I didn’t like. Her head is so feminine with super
eye colour and pigment. She flows down her neck and over her shoulders and
hindquarters with superb angulation to compliment her substance. Correct coat
and her well clothed tail wagged gently to complete the picture . Such a clean
outline, nothing out of place . I held my breath hoping she moved as well I
hoped, which she did with aplomb. So sound and unexaggerated, just Labrador all
through . CC and BIS with the agreement of my co-judge . I hope she doesn’t have
to wait too long for her title.
2nd Mr W
and Mrs G Dodd Carriegame Precious Jewel . Black with excellent clean outline.
Well proportioned with good angulation. Level topline, well sprung barrel .
Correct coat Moved ok. A very sweet bitch who was unlucky to meet the winner in
this class.
Mid Limit Bitch
(11,0a)
1st Mrs
D.M Hopkinson Rocheby Serenity . Yellow bitch who caught my eye when she entered
the ring as she reminded me of some great bitches from a few years ago. I now
know she is a daughter of the great producer R .Old Smokey so my first instinct
was correct. She has an appealing head and expression, lacking a little pigment
but enough for the time of year. Classic clean outline. Good angulation. Level
topline, good bone and feet. Nothing overdone. Strode out well on the move.
2nd Mrs
S.L Minchella Abbeystead Psion Of Haselorhill. Black of quite different type but
nevertheless I was splitting hairs to find my winner in this class. Gorgeous
kind expression on this bitch who never stopped trying to please. Lovely in
profile and has a super front. Just didn’t quite match 1 in rear angulation.
Moved well once settled.
Limit Bitch (20,5a)
1st Mrs
L.J Kent Chyanhal Trevose Of Trewinnard JW. Very happy black showgirl of
substance. Shown in lovely condition. Sweet kind head with excellent eye colour.
Clean neck, well made shoulders and front, level topline, good barrel, excellent
width to hindquarters. Stood on good legs and tight feet. Moved well around the
ring. I considered her for top honours. Her time will come.
2nd Miss C
Jones Hafnau Orabela . Another black of substance and breed type who was very
similar to 1 just not as positive on the move, although I thought she was
carrying a fraction too much weight which possibly affected her movement .
Nevertheless she is a good bitch with lots to like . Her front assembly is
particularly good.
Open Bitch (14,7a)
Two super bitches
headed this class
1st Mr S.J
and Mrs L.A O’Brien SH CH Maxfield Arabella. Yellow who reminded me so much of
my old girl in her make and shape and demeanour. Such a lady. Well chiselled
head and a melting expression. Clean throughout with super front and rear
assembly. Well balanced from all angles. Neat feet, good spring of rib, and a
tail straight off her back. Showed her heart out in this class and later in the
challenge. Moved with purpose and drive. A well deserved champion and I was
delighted to award her the RCC.

is well balanced and unexaggerated. Lovely head. Beautiful clean construction,
good bone and tight feet. Tail straight of her back. Nothing overdone at all.
Moved well. More than worthy of her title.

was enjoying her day. Neat bitch with a nice outline and good angulation. Enough

which meant she couldn’t have anything but a correct topline. Good coat. Enough
bone for her size, tight neat feet. Moved very well and shown in excellent
condition. What a shame she couldn’t stay for the veteran challenge.
2nd Mr A
and Mrs P Frazer Silmarillion Lady Luthien. Almost 10 yrs old yellow who had
super breed type. She was so willing to please and exhibited all the good things
about a Labrador . Pleasing head, super outline ,good bone and feet. She moved
