Judges' Critiques

 

Dogs

It was a pleasure to judge males at the Labrador Club of Wales Championship show, my thanks to the committee and officers along with appreciation to my excellent stewards, Julie and Kirsty who kept things ticking along smoothly.

A great venue and a pleasant atmosphere, with winners receiving deserved applause.

 

Class 1        Minor Puppy Dog  (12, 4 abs.) 

1st     Dreyfus. TACO TICO FIAMMA CANTANTE, Promising black baby of ideal size and looking just how a minor puppy should. Liked his well proportioned head and correct eye shape, giving a typical expression. .Has good bone and tight feet. Very pleasing in profile, clean neck and well placed shoulders. Short coupled through the body and well angulated at the rear. In good coat and had a lovely otter tail. Held himself together well on the move.

2nd    Coodes. STREAMANDA BALLA BALLA WITH WARRINGAH. Pleasing chocolate dog who was a stage further on than the winner, being a little bigger in frame. Liked his profile displaying his general good construction. Has ample bone and substance for age and moved sound and steady, displaying good reach and drive.

3rd    Youns & Parkes. POTTERZURI CHIP OF THE OLD BLOCK

 

Class 2        Puppy Dog  (8, 3)

1st     Metcalfes. BAILEYDALE PUFF DADDY JW. Black dog who is a real showman and well schooled for 10 months old. Very pleasing in profile with an outline that can not be ignored, being very well balanced throughout. I liked his  well-proportioned head and expression leading into a good clean reach of neck and well placed shoulders. Good bone and tight feet. Short coupled through the body and well angulated at the rear, with powerful quarters. Never put a foot wrong and always stood foursquare. In tip top coat and condition. Good on the move holding his outline and firm topline whilst displaying good reach and drive. Pleased to award him BPIS in agreement with my co judge.

Class 3        Junior Dog  (7)

1st     Digweeds . WILLOKIN'S WHISTLE BLOWER. Pale yellow that I liked very much, has a pleasing head and typical expression. Well balanced through the body and short coupled. Has a decent spring of rib for his age. Good bone and carrying ideal weight for his size. Well angulated all through which certainly showed on the move, maintaining his pleasing outline. In good coat and condition and showed steadily. 

2nd    Potters . HARROP PICK POCKET. Well constructed black, a little less mature than winner but certainly developing along the right lines. Good head and expression, balanced in profile with a good topline and tailset. Moved  well once he had settled.

3rd    Mclellans . SARANDEN SHADEUXPLAY

         

Class 4        Yearling Dog  (8)

1st     Woodleys . ALKHAMHURST MOMENT OF TRUTH. Smart black dog with super topline and good tailset that instantly draws your attention. Very well balanced throughout, particularly liked his front assembly, allowing his feet to be well under his body. Good bone and correct feet. In excellent coat and condition. He has just the right amount of substance in my opinion. It was no surprise he moved well covering the ground with ease, displaying reach and drive. 

2nd    Odell and Bliss . SARANDEN THUNDER ROAD. Slightly less developed yellow who took a little time to settle. Pleasing head and expression. Good bone and feet. I would prefer slightly more upper arm angulation, has good quarters and in good coat and condition.

Class 5        Maiden Dog  (5, 2)

1st     Digweeds . WILLOKIN'S WHISTLE BLOWER. As JD

Class 6        Novice Dog  (11, 2)

1st     Braddons . TRENDLEWOOD THE MAN. Yellow of 14 months. Really liked his well proportioned head with eye of correct shape giving such a typical expression. Presents a balanced outline being well constructed throughout, with a clean reach of neck. Ample bone and good feet. Just needs to mature on, thought him very promising and was moving well.

2nd    Perkins . KEENINSPIRES CAPTAIN ERIC. Chocolate of good colour and in good coat. Pleasing topline and tail. Stands foursquare has good bone and tidy feet. Moved well once he settled.

3rd    Kings . LINTHWAITE THEODORE

 

Class 7        Undergraduate Dog  (3)

1st     Daveys . CLANFIELD HIGHLAND PIPER. Yellow shown to best advantage, well constructed throughout, compact and made in one piece. Carrying just the right amount of weight and in good coat and condition. Has ample bone and substance. Pleasing construction front and rear, with powerful quarters allowing him to move out well.

2nd    Kents . TREWINNARD THE TAYLOR. Really liked the head on this yellow dog, lovely expression. Has good bone and tight feet. Level topline and good tailset. Felt he was slightly longer coupled than the winner so not quite as balanced in outline.

3rd     Parkers . LIGHTBRINGER FRODON

         

Class 8        Graduate Dog  (9,2)

1st     Johnsons . CREMINO CALABRESE. I was very taken with this yellow. He has a really clean cut outline that displays his many virtues clearly. He’s another dog that is so very well balanced that he cannot be ignored. Head coming along nicely and is well proportioned with a typical expression. Super clean neck into an excellent front assembly allowing his front feet to be well under his body. Has a good spring of rib and a short coupled body. Good topline and tail. Pleasing turn of stifle and good quarters. Really moved out well and accurately from all angels. On his toes and in good coat and condition, deserving the Res CC today. His day will come with a little more maturity I am sure.

2nd    Ellis . DOLWEN STARGAZER. Pleasing type of yellow dog with no exaggerations, presenting a good outline. Well proportioned head into a good reach of neck. Stands foursquare and is well angulated front and rear. In muscular condition and moving well.

3rd    Majors . LINJOR WINTER FROST

         

Class 9        Post Graduate Dog  (7, 1)

1st     Dawsons . BESKERBY PAGEANT. Good type of yellow dog, strongly built throughout, with a good reach of neck and pleasing topline. Carrying just the right amount of weight and in good coat and condition. Balanced in outline being well made front and rear. Pleasing on the move holding his good topline.

2nd    Callaghans . ROYALTY AT BANNABEACH VICTOR VICTORIA'S. Upstanding chocolate boy presented in very good order. Pleasing in head with good eye shape and colour, giving a kind expression. Has ample bone and tidy feet, Well constructed throughout hence moved very well.

3rd    Daveys . CLANFIELD BOUNTY

 

Class 10        Mid Limit Dog  (4, 2)

1st     Coodes . WARRINGAH'S THE BLUFF JW. Smart looking well presented  medium size black. Really appreciated his lovely head and expression. Balanced all through and short coupled. Stands on good bone and tidy feet. Pleasing in all departments and a good steady mover covering the ground well.

2nd    Hutchinsons . GLOSMERE THE GRENADIER JW. Well bodied black carrying an excellent double coat. Holds a good outline with a strong topline, being well constructed front and rear. His heavy coat and compactness can make him appear a shade short in leg in my opinion.

 

Class 11        Limit Dog  (14, 7)

1st     Dodds . CARRIEGAME MOONSHINE.  Very nice type of black with lots to appreciate. He's all male but has no exaggeration or coarseness and is of a medium build, carrying just the right amount of weight and in good coat.  Has a lovely head with a typical honest Labrador expression. Good reach of neck into a strong level topline. Balanced and well constructed all through with good chest and spring of rib. Liked his strong quarters which he used to flow around the ring. He was in my final consideration for top awards today.

2nd    Mills . LEMBAS MAUI. Pleasing type of black who holds himself together well, liked his head, neck and shoulders. Good topline and was always presented standing foursquare. In good coat and condition. 1st had the edge on movement today. He's very promising.

3rd    Hodkiss . DINNOZO TOP NOTCH ALFIE

 

Class 12        Open Dog  (9, 2)

1st     Grummit & Demseys . IR SH CH DROMTACKER MADE TO ORDER. A dog I have admired for a while and he was in sparkling form today. He has the most attractive and well proportioned head, so typical and honest, all Labrador.  Has a lovely clean neck into well placed shoulders. Just the right amount of bone for his size and neat feet. Well bodied with good spring of rib, but carrying no access weight at all. Pleasing second thigh and has strong powerful quarters. All this topped of with a lovely topline into a well set otter tail. He’s such an easy and honest mover, a pleasure to watch. Took top spot today. CC and Res BIS in agreement with my co judge.  His crowning CC I believe , so many congratulations. 

2nd    Hodges . SH CH NAIKEN EAST MEETS WEST JW. Substantial black dog in great coat and condition, with a lovely otter tail. Scores in head and clean neck, flowing into a good topline and tailest. Presents a really balance picture and presents himself well, standing foursquare. Has ample bone and substance. Powerful quarters which he really used on the move holding his pleasing outline. A most worthy Sh Ch indeed.

Class 13        Special Beginners Dog  (7)

 1st    Digweeds. WILLOKIN'S WHISTLE BLOWER. As JD

2nd    Haslams . MANORWELL BUCKSKIN AT LYNQUEST JW. Pleasing type of yellow, very honest and made in one piece. In good fit condition and coming back into coat. Liked his overall make and shape and moved very well. Another with a correctly proportioned head giving a typical expression.

 

3rd    Potters . HARROP PICK POCKET

         

Class 14        Special Working Dog  (1)

1st     Lamberts . CH MATTAND EXODUS JW. A favourite of mine since I first judged him as a minor puppy and he went on to fulfil all my expectations … and more. Very well made all through and so good to go over as he’s made in one piece, everything just flows together. Still like his head, he has that look of fun and willing to please. In great coat and condition, though must not carry any more weight. Still excellent on the move sound and steady showing reach and drive holding a good outline. Best Veteran in Show, in good competition.

 

Class 15        Veteran Dog  (6, 1)

1st     Majors . SH CH LINJOR CASSABLANCA JW ShCM. Handsome looking dog who is strongly built throughout, with a well proportioned head and typical kind expression. Very well balanced all through and well off for bone and substance without being too heavy. Clearly enjoying the day and moving very well indeed. 

2nd    Youns & Parkes . POTTERSPINEY RICHOCHET. Scores in head and expression, very typical. Liked his topline and always standing foursquare. Moved well and was in good coat and condition.

3rd    Moodys . TRENDLEWOOD MR BLUE SKY

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge this friendly well run show. Thank you to the exhibitors for a fabulous entry and my stewards Huw and Simon for keeping the ring running smoothly. I was spoilt for choice in some classes and was pleased with my final line up.

 

MPB. 16 (2ab) 1st. Campbell’s Tullochmohr Tura to Binnaig NAF TAF. Well constructed 8 1/2 month black, shown in super condition, sweet head and expression, good forechest, deep through rib, well angled front and rear, good width of second thigh, moved with ease. 2nd. Edwards Kimbajak Miss Jazz Swinger. Slightly smaller yellow of 6 months, presenting a balanced outline, pretty in head, correct shoulder placement, good length of leg leading to neat feet, moved well. 3rd Stewart’s Streamanda Guilder Rose.

 

PB. 8 (1ab) 1st. Bradley’s Nancy’s Special Treasure. Substantial 9 month black, beautiful head and dark eye, clean in neck, level topline and tailset, good depth of chest, standing on good bone, compact tidy feet, moved straight and true. Best Puppy bitch. 2nd. Porter’s Winnellands Vanilla Sky. Yellow 8 month old, feminine gentle head with dark pigment, good fore chest, correct lay of shoulder, liked her turn of stifle, loosing her coat but enough for her place in this lovely class. 3rd. Lavelle’s Crosscroyde Cheeky Emma.

 

JB. 21 (4ab). 1st. Casey & Jayes Lapema Masquerade At Sandylands. 14 months old, pale yellow, feminine head with good length of muzzle and well set on ears, correct lay of shoulder, good reach of neck flowing to level topline and well set tail, good depth of chest, good turn of stifle with well muscled second thigh, creating a lovely classic outline. She moved and was shown in tiptop condition and was pleased to award her CC and in agreement with my co judge awarded BIS. I was pleased to learn this was her 3rd CC making her up. 2nd. Harvey-Major’s Linjor Miss Jones. Good size darker yellow bitch with a melting expression, super in front, good depth of chest, clean neck firm topline leading to well set tail, stands on good bone, free moving. 3rd. Venturi Rose’s Leospring East Tennessee.

 

YB. 10 (2ab). 1st. Campbell’s Binnaig Berne Smart black of 22months, beautiful head, good eye colour, gentle expression, correct lay of shoulder and good barrel rib, clean in outline, well boned on neat feet in excellent coat and condition, moved freely and covered the ground with ease. 2nd. Dodd’s Carriegame Precious Jewel. Very showy black 18 months old, feminine head, good angles front and rear, level topline and tail, good width of thigh, moved well. 3rd. Tooth’s Ludalor Loquacious.

 

MB. 10. 1st.  Braddon’s  Chyanhal Pendray in Trendlewood. Smart black bitch 14 months old. Pretty head, presenting a clean and balanced outline, good angles front and rear, in good coat, moved well. 2nd. Edwards Kimbajack Miss Jazz Swinger. Second in MP. 3rd. Mcgillivray’s Antonine She’s Like the Wind(AI).

 

NB. 19 (2ab). 1st. Campbells Tullochmohr Tura to Binnaig. Naf Taf. 1st MP. 2nd.  Mclellan’s Saranden The River. Beautiful Yellow, pretty in head with good eye colour, clean through neck, correct lay of shoulder leading to level topline and well set on tail, in excellent coat, covered the ground well. 3rd. Braddon’s Trendlewood Shape of You.

 

UGB. 5. (1ab). 1st. Frazier’s Silmarillion Gondolin. Yellow bitch, pleasing head, well made with good second thigh, looked balanced in outline, moved well. 2nd. Bentley’s Abbeystead Puzzle. Well made Black scopier than one, kind head with a good length of muzzle, stood on good bone and feet, moved with ease. 3rd. Bishop’s Exelby Solangelica Via Demadon.

 

GB. 12 (2ab). 1st. Mclellan’s Wynfaul Happy New Year for Saranden. Dark yellow with a well proportioned body, pretty head and complimentary eye colour, standing on good bone and tidy feet, in good coat, moved very well. 2nd. Kent’s Chyanhal Trevose of Trewinnard JW. Lovely black, feminine head, good reach of neck leading to a flowing topline and tail. Correct angles, not quite in full coat, moved freely around the ring. 3rd. Mills Lembas Kakamora.

 

PGB. 22 (4ab). 1st. Grummitt’s Suttonpark Sweet Revenge At Manorwell. Lovely dark yellow presented in fit hard condition, so much to like, from her feminine gentle head, to her well constructed body, level topline and well set tail, covered the ground freely, straight and true. 2nd. Hodge & Lapper’s Naiken Evita AI. Well presented black, kind head, deep through rib, clean in neck, level topline kept on the move, lovely ottertail and in good coat, moved straight and with drive. 3rd. Minchella’s  Abbeystead Psion of Haslelorhill.

 

MLB. 14 (3ab). 1st. Allen’s Saranden Santee Sioux Timouron. Showy black who caught my eye as she entered the ring, loved every thing about her from her kind head and expression, level topline and ottertail, good angulations with well developed second thigh, correct double coat, used the space of the ring to cover the ground with ease. Pleased to award her RCC. 2nd. Jones Hafnau Orabela. Well presented black with good eye shape and colour, correct lay of shoulder, deep through chest, good turn of stifle, moved well. 3rd. Carpanini’s Carpenny Berry.

 

LB. 20 (4ab). 1st. Stoker’s Madgack Mimosa. Black feminine head well set on ears, clean through neck with a firm topline which she kept on the move, good clean angles, plenty of bone, tidy feet, showed herself well making her stand out, in full coat, excellent on the move. 2nd. Shirton’s Woolmans Proper Dream Maker. Slightly larger yellow, lovely head and expression, clean and tidy in outline, stood four square on good feet moving sound and true. 3rd Stewart’s Warringah’s Ora Banda With Streamanda.

 

OB. 11 (3ab).1st. Lally’s SH CH Trewinnard Pimlico. Clean in outline classy black, nothing overdone about this bitch, feminine head kind eye, super topline kept when moving and well set tail, good forechest and firm second thigh, moved around the ring with drive. 2nd Rowe’s SH CH Rochevale Once Upon. Another quality yellow, beautiful head and expression, good front and turn of stifle, preferred the topline on one. 3rd. SH CH Naiken Etoile (AI).

 

SBB. 9. 1st. King’s Linthwaite Arabella. Unplaced in a strong junior class, lots to like about this girl who still looks a real baby, pretty head kind expressive eyes, well constructed, moved out well. 2nd. Potter’s Harrow On The Horizon. Similar remarks apply as 1 but just a little bigger all over. 3rd. Spratt’s Briwed Flo Nightingale.

 

SWB. 1. 1st. Coode’s Warringah’s Gulwarra JW SGWC. Lots to like about this chocolate bitch, kindest of heads, clean through neck, good angles front and rear, in fit hard condition, moved out well, not in the best coat on the day.

 

VB. Ab).1st. Shirton’s Woolman Proper Fancy Free. 9 years old darker yellow, sweetest of heads, well set ears, clean through neck, good front and rear angles, stood four square on good feet, moved easily around the ring. 2nd. Frazer’s Silmarillion Lady Luthien. Similar remarks to one, preferred head and expression of class winner. 3rd. Mills Linjor Magnolia at Jaybec.
